May 2025

Observing wildlife veterinary work up close with Dr. Ryan van Deventer of Wildlife Solutions

            was nothing short of incredible.

I had the privilege of working alongside some of South Africa’s top wildlife vets during the relocation of three sub-adult lions—a powerful experience on every level.

A huge shout-out to Dr. Ryan. Calm, professional, precise, and deeply knowledgeable—his presence puts everyone at ease, animals and humans alike. He approaches each procedure with care, clarity, and deep respect for the wildlife he works with.

Truly one of the best. A joy to be around and a force for good in the world of wildlife conservation.

These young lions were entering adolescence and beginning to challenge the pride's dominant male—a natural but dangerous shift. To prevent escalating conflict, potential inbreeding with their mother, and disruption to the reserve’s broader ecosystem, they needed a new home: a place with enough land to roam freely, form their own pride, and thrive.

The vets approached the move with exceptional care. Each lion was darted from a helicopter, health-checked, and monitored closely. They spent a few days in a large outdoor boma to acclimate before being transported by specialized truck to their new reserve.

Because reserves in South Africa are fenced—unlike open ecosystems in countries like Kenya or Zambia—management and careful relocations like this are vital for long-term conservation. I'm happy to report the lions are doing really- well in their new home.

Being this close to lions, part of such a significant operation, was unforgettable. Wild, emotional, and deeply humbling.

Here’s some interesting things Wildlife Vets Check Before Moving Lions

When relocating lions, vets need to ensure the animals are

           healthy, safe to transport

, and won’t pose a risk to the new ecosystem.

Precise dosage is crucial—too little is dangerous, too much can harm the lion.

           Other Key Considerations

            Behavior:

Observed for stress, social behavior, and readiness for release.

            Reproductive Status:

Especially important in preventing inbreeding or stress during pregnancy.

            Vaccinations:

Given if needed, based on disease risk in the new area.

Because South African reserves are fenced,

lion relocations must be carefully planned

to avoid conflict and support long-term conservation goals.

I’d be so lucky to do this again!

Matira Bush Camp has my heart. It’s my sanctuary, my escape, and my connection point to the untamed soul of the African wilderness. Every time I return to the Maasai Mara, I return to Matira. Tucked deep into the bush, far from the crowds and noise, this intimate camp is perfectly positioned for an immersive wildlife experience. It feels raw, wild, and private—just how the Mara is meant to be experienced.

The moment you arrive, you’re welcomed not just as a guest, but as part of something greater—a respectful cohabitant of the land. The camp blends rustic charm with thoughtful, sustainable design. Natural materials, soft lighting, and organic textures connect you seamlessly to your surroundings. The attention to detail is quiet, deliberate, and never overstated—from the warm cloth handed to you at dawn before your game drive, to the gentle lantern glow that guides you back to your tent at night.

The guides here are nothing short of extraordinary. With deep knowledge passed down through generations and honed by years in the field, they don’t just track animals—they read the landscape like a living story. Every sound, every paw print, every shifting breeze carries meaning. Their passion for wildlife and their respect for the ecosystem is infectious. The staff are equally remarkable—gracious, attentive, and always present without being intrusive. There’s a sense that everyone here shares the same heartbeat, quietly tuned to the rhythm of the land.

And then… there are the lions.

Lion trekking in the Mara is something I’ll carry with me forever. It’s not a typical safari drive—it’s intimate, intentional, and deeply respectful. Walking through tall grass, tracking a pride by the signs they leave behind—fresh paw prints in the mud, the flick of a tail in the distance, the low rumble of a lioness calling to her cubs—it’s very cool. You become part of the ecosystem, bound by awe and humility.

Being in the presence of lions; their power is unquestionable, but so is their grace, their familial tenderness, and their silent communication. Just amazing.

           A bit about the Mara

The Maasai Mara is one of Eastern Africa’s most iconic and ecologically rich regions. Located in the southwest of Kenya, and covering around 1,600 km², the reserve is part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem which extends north from Tanzania. It’s only a short flight from Nairobi, but it feels worlds away.

The landscape is a masterpiece—vast grasslands stretch as far as you can see. Sparingly filled with acacia trees, rocky outcrops known as inselbergs, and winding rivers like the Mara and Talek which are boarded by dense forests and mixed open plains. The land is also shaped by countless korongos—small gullies and seasonal waterways that attract wildlife and create microhabitats teeming with life.

Geologically and geographically, the Maasai Mara is a continuation of the famed Serengeti, but it offers something distinctly its own. The annual Great Migration—one of nature’s most epic spectacles—passes through here. From July to October, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and other grazers flood into the Mara in search of lush pastures, pursued by predators. The land seems to breathe, contract, and expand with their movement. This is incredible, but I tend to stay away from the crowds and go off season.

           People of the Mara

Equally important are the people who call this land home. The Maasai, with their vibrant red shukas, deep cultural knowledge, and unwavering guardianship of the land, are an integral part of the Mara’s spirit. Many of Matira’s guides and staff are Maasai themselves, and their connection to this place runs deep.

There’s a profound respect that exists between the people, the animals, and the land—one that you feel in conversation, in the silence of a sunset, and in the stories shared around the campfire.

The Masai Mara is my go-to place.

The photo above is of a gasoline-powered vehicle since we do not have a photo of an electric vehicle.

The first light of dawn settles over the sky as I finish packing my snacks for the game drive today. The driver and the guide, my companions for this game drive, are already in the SUV, ready to go when I climb on board. The soft hum of the engine is almost inaudible, a stark contrast to the roaring diesel engines of the past. This is no ordinary vehicle; it’s a hydrogen-powered innovation, a testament to the vital role that technology plays in promoting sustainability.

As technology continues to rapidly evolve, it brings exciting new possibilities for travel, and it’s especially exciting when these technological advancements give us new tools to manage our carbon footprint. The automotive industry is no bystander. At the forefront of the effort to develop more sustainable modes of safari transportation is INEOS Automotive. Just last year, they introduced a safari vehicle that runs on hydrogen fuel, citing the greenhouse gas emission targets that have been set by the EU and European governments as among their motivations.

Driving through the sun-drenched savannah, it becomes clear that the benefits of hydrogen fuel go beyond reducing emissions. Hydrogen-powered vehicles, like electric vehicles, are noticeably more quiet and less disruptive to the wildlife, and we find ourselves belonging in the tapestry of the savannah instead of intruding upon it. It’s not just about reducing emissions; it’s about transforming the way in which we experience the world. With the beautiful blend of cutting-edge technology and environmental consciousness, we reap a more harmonious coexistence with nature.

There’s no doubt that we still have endless technological innovation ahead of us in the world of eco-friendly travel. For this reason, it might be worth taking a pause and evaluating the true extent to which the current development of hydrogen fuel is as eco-friendly as it seems. The first concern often raised against hydrogen fuel is its feasibility.

, “Electric cars are ideal for city centers and short journeys. But hydrogen is much better for longer journeys and heavier loads, and that requires immediate investment in hydrogen distribution and hydrogen filling stations.” Former U.S. Department of Energy official Joseph Romm challenged the feasibility of building these hydrogen distribution and hydrogen filling stations, arguing that “a hydrogen car is one of the least efficient, most expensive ways to reduce greenhouse gases.” He evaluates the financial feasibility of implementing hydrogen fuel in more detail in his book The Hype about Hydrogen, Fact and Fiction in the Race to Save the Climate.

The second major concern, more directly related to the environment, centers on the method of producing hydrogen fuel through electrolysis. Electrolysis is the process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity, and it requires a significant amount of electricity. According to an

published on their website about the carbon cost of electric grids. I’m pasting a quote from that article below:

“Using renewable electricity will guarantee that hydrogen electrolysis is carbon-free for everything beyond the carbon embodied in the materials needed for power generation and electrolysis. But what happens to the emissions profile of hydrogen electrolysis when its electricity comes from a carbon-intensive grid? RMI analysis finds that green hydrogen produced on today’s fossil-heavy grid in Texas, for example, would have an average annual carbon intensity over 20 kg CO2 per kg H2. That would nearly double the emissions footprint of hydrogen made from natural gas with no carbon capture and storage (‘grey’ hydrogen).

Fortunately, the world’s electrical grids are quickly decarbonizing, with many expected to be low-carbon by the 2040s. Until then, it is necessary to provide certainty that grid-connected electrolysis is sufficiently low-carbon”

So, are the electric grids that INEOS uses decarbonized?

Based on my research, I don’t know.

There are so many different factors, scientific concepts, and tradeoffs to consider when trying to be eco-friendly, especially when traveling and trying to minimize or offset your carbon footprint. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth getting stuck on every detail and putting too much pressure on ourselves to get everything right, but staying informed can always help. In any case, it’s very encouraging to see how rapidly technology is advancing, and, with that, how we are constantly gaining new tools to safeguard the planet’s wildlife, protect the natural wonders we cherish, and preserve the beauty of the world for future generations.

Experiencing the incredible work of Rhino 911

Founder of RHINO 911, Nico Jacobs,

and his team provide emergency helicopter rescue to rhinos injured or orphaned due to poaching and other injuries. They’ve responded to over 140 calls for help since their inception in 2008, and the numbers keep going up!

Nico says it’s a great honor, duty, and privilege to be working with these amazing creatures, and they use every available resource to ensure that they do not fade away into a memory, like so many other animals that have become extinct.

Nico explained to me how helicopter pilots who are trained for both flying and working with wildlife are hard to come by. At present, Nico has been donating all his flying time. What a truly amazing, brave, giving, and heroic man he is!

What’s interesting that I recently learned about, is that the market rate for pilots is $300 per hour, which is what Rhino 911 must pay when outsourcing flights that Nico can’t attend, and depending on the incursions and missions per month, Rhino 911 averages around 15 to 25 hours of flying per month. So, you see, air support is unfortunately not cheap, but nonetheless vital to rhino conservation.

To give you an even better idea of the operational costs associated with Rhino 911 operations: a new Robinson 44 Raven II helicopter costs $575,000. The R44 is a wonderful utility helicopter that is perfect for 75% of the work that Rhino 911 does on a day-to-day basis.

Training of new pilots is important to ensure continuity of operations. It costs an average of $20,000 for a pilot to complete his PPL (Private Pilot’s License), then another 200 hours and CPL (Commercial Pilot license) exams to be commercially accredited.

Rhino 911’s dedication and commitment to protecting Africa’s rhinos is incredible. They’re also some of the kindest and nicest people I have ever met.

It's important to understand the costs of conservation operations and the work being done on the frontlines to protect Africa’s wildlife because these conservation efforts are the reason why you’re still able to see a rhino whilst on your safari.

Consider this: once you donate to Rhino 911, you’re not just saving the life of one animal, but also investing in a future for rhinos, not only in South Africa, but in more countries around the world.

About 8-9 years ago when I volunteered with Africa Impact in Africa, I witnessed an impala antelope give birth in the grasslands of the Naboisho Conservancy.

The Naboisho Conservancy is in Kenya, in the Maasai Mara region. I’ve been to the region quite a number of times, and I have another trip planned in Kenya, in September and December, but back then, I was very much still in my early days volunteering.

I was part of a team in charge of counting “plains game,” like various antelopes, Zebras etc.. These are the animals that are not considered part of the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo). The data we collected helped the research team assess how the wildlife was doing in that particular area.

Because it gets very hot around midday, we had to get out into the field early in the morning when it was still relatively cool. There were two other people in my team: the driver and the project guide. We got up at 5:00 a.m., slathered ourselves in sunscreen, and were in the vehicle by 5:30 a.m., when the sun was just coming up.

The driver took us around all four corners of the conservancy, north and south, east and west. In some areas, there were lots of animals, and in other areas, there were few. We all stayed inside the vehicle, at a respectful distance from the wildlife so as not to disturb them. The guide and I counted the animals we could see the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper, and then imputed them in small hand held mechanical calculators to help us save the calculations. Perhaps a tedious task but it was worth being in the bush.

It was the driver who noticed the impala antelope first (you quickly learn the different markings on antelopes from their markings, body size etc). She was visibly pregnant and restless, pacing back and forth.

She seemed on high alert, and understandably so, as predators can smell when an antelope/all animal gives birth. Baboons will typically make an alarm call if there’s danger nearby and the antelope would know to flee.

We stopped the vehicle and patiently watched the impala in the near distance continue to go into labor; starting and stopping, just like a human. An hour and a half later, a little head peaked out! And then a

a beautiful baby fell onto the ground. The mother recovered for a quick moment, and then immediately began cleaning the baby. This fragile-delicate long legged little antelope was adorable! It struggled several times to get on his/hers wonky legs and steady them, but finally, this little baby was standing next to its mother (not sure if the baby was a male or female)!

A day later, we came back to the same area and saw the baby impala and noticed it was alone, and was curled up in a little ball, relaxing and blending into the open grass (the mother was likely close by eating). What's interesting about baby impalas is that in the early days of their lives, they don’t have the ability to protect themselves, so they will position themselves to blend into the natural elements of the earth, which is how they quietly disguise themselves.

What's interesting is with the Impalas' long gestation period of about 7-8 months, the babies' muscles are well-formed in the womb so within a half an hour of their birth they are able to stand up and after an hour are able to run alongside their mother.

It's really amazing to witness life being brought into the world. I have yet to see another wildlife birth. Keeping fingers crossed this happens again!

Planning Your Safari; Some Key Points

Embarking on the journey of planning a safari requires careful consideration and expert guidance. Here are some important points to keep in mind:

           Complexity of African Travel:

Navigating Africa can be challenging, especially for first-time travelers. The continent's vastness, diverse landscapes, and varying infrastructures make it essential to seek assistance from a knowledgeable travel expert.

           Expertise is Key:

For most people, a safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and entrusting the planning process to an expert ensures that every detail is thoughtfully curated to meet your preferences and expectations. Travel advisors who specialize in African safaris have insider knowledge and connections that can better your trip.

           Property Booking Challenges:

Many safari properties prefer to work with travel agencies rather than individual bookings. This can make it difficult for travelers to secure accommodations on their own. Working with a travel expert grants access to a wider range of properties and ensures smooth booking processes.

           Navigating Destination Options:

Africa boasts numerous safari destinations, each offering unique wildlife experiences and landscapes. From the Serengeti to the Okavango Delta, the options can be overwhelming. A knowledgeable travel advisor can help narrow down the choices based on your interests and preferences.

           Customized Experiences:

Crafting a safari program requires careful orchestration. Each destination and property should complement one another and provide a seamless and enriching experience. A travel expert can tailor your itinerary to include a variety of activities and accommodations that suit your interests.

Travel advisors who have firsthand experience visiting safari destinations can offer invaluable insights beyond glossy pictures. Their personal observations and recommendations can help you make informed decisions and create a truly memorable safari experience.

onservation experience to your safari can be a meaningful way to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts while gaining a deeper understanding of the environment. Here's how you can incorporate conservation activities into your safari:

           Choose Conservation-Focused Lodges:

opt for accommodations that prioritize sustainability and conservation. Many lodges and camps in Africa actively support wildlife conservation initiatives through community involvement, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching efforts. By staying at these properties, you'll be supporting their conservation efforts directly.

           Guided Conservation Tours:

Some safari operators/WE offer guided tours focused specifically on wildlife conservation. These tours may include visits to conservation projects, research centers, and rehabilitation facilities where you can learn about ongoing conservation efforts and interact with conservation professionals. It

           Support Conservation Projects:

Allocate part of your travel budget to support conservation projects and initiatives in the areas you visit. This could involve donating to conservation organizations, purchasing wildlife-themed merchandise from local artisans, or participating in fundraising events organized by lodges or tour operators.

           Responsible Wildlife Viewing:

Practice responsible wildlife viewing etiquette during your safari to minimize disturbance to animals and their habitats. Follow guidelines provided by your guides and avoid behaviors that could stress or endanger wildlife, such as getting too close or making loud noises.

By incorporating conservation experiences into your safari, you not only contribute to wildlife conservation efforts but also gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the importance of protecting it for future generations to enjoy.

           Research Destinations:

Determine which country or countries you want to visit for your safari. Popular destinations include Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia, among others. Each destination offers unique wildlife experiences and landscapes.

Choose the Best Time to Go:

Research the best time of year to visit your chosen destination for optimal wildlife viewing. This can vary depending on factors such as migration patterns, weather, and animal behavior.

           Set a Budget:

Determine your budget for the safari, including costs for accommodations, transportation, park fees, tours, meals, and any additional activities. Safari costs can vary widely depending on location, accommodation type, and duration.

           Select Accommodations:

Choose the type of accommodation that suits your preferences and budget. Options range from luxury lodges and tented camps to budget-friendly campsites. Consider factors such as location, amenities, and proximity to wildlife reserves.

           Plan Your Itinerary:

Decide how many days you want to spend on safari and plan your itinerary accordingly. Research the wildlife reserves and national parks you want to visit, and allocate time for game drives, guided walks, and other activities.

           Book Flights and Transportation:

Once you have your itinerary finalized, book your flights to the nearest airport, and arrange transportation to your accommodations. Many safari operators offer airport transfers and transportation between lodges.

           Pack Appropriately:

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing suitable for the climate and activities. Essentials may include sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, binoculars, a camera with extra batteries, and any necessary medications.

           Prepare for Health and Safety:

Check if any vaccinations or medications are required for your destination and consult your healthcare provider well in advance. Take precautions against malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation if needed.

           Flexible:

While it's good to have a plan, remember that wildlife sightings can be unpredictable. Stay flexible and be prepared to adapt your itinerary based on weather conditions and wildlife movements.

           Enjoy the Experience:

Once you're on safari, immerse yourself in the incredible sights and sounds of the natural world. Listen to your guides, ask questions, and savor every moment of your safari adventure.

How can you give back to the planet by doing an African safari and conservation work?

There really are a variety of opportunities to give back to the planet. Here are some great ways you can contribute:

           Support Conservation Organizations:

Many safari operators collaborate with conservation organizations dedicated to preserving wildlife and habitats. Travelers can donate directly to these organizations or participate in fundraisers organized by safari lodges.

           Volunteer Programs:

Numerous safari lodges and conservation projects offer volunteer opportunities for travelers interested in actively contributing to conservation efforts. Volunteers can assist with tasks such as wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, and community outreach programs. Remember, you just have to do your research on who is legit and who is not.

           Wildlife Monitoring and Research:

Join guided wildlife monitoring excursions that allow travelers to assist conservationists in tracking animal populations, recording behavioral data, and collecting valuable research information. This data helps inform conservation strategies and management plans.

           Anti-Poaching Initiatives:

Some safari operators support anti-poaching efforts by funding ranger patrols, providing equipment and training, and raising awareness about the impacts of poaching on wildlife populations. Travelers can contribute by participating in ranger-led patrols or by spreading awareness about the importance of wildlife protection. I first participated with the Ulinzi Africa Foundation in Kenya as they offered a ‘walk with rangers’ style program. It is owned and operated by founder Rabbia Hawa.

           storation Projects:

Participating in habitat restoration projects, such as tree planting initiatives or invasive species removal programs, helps improve the health and resilience of ecosystems. Travelers can volunteer their time to work alongside local communities and conservation organizations in restoring degraded habitats. I did this for Africa Impact around 10 years ago.

           Community Engagement and Development:

Sustainable tourism prioritizes the well-being of local communities living in or near wildlife habitats. Travelers can support community development initiatives by purchasing locally made crafts (avoid wood), visiting community-owned tourism enterprises, and engaging in cultural exchanges with residents.

           Educational Outreach:

Safari guides often serve as ambassadors for conservation, providing educational opportunities for travelers to learn about local ecosystems, wildlife conservation challenges, and sustainable living practices. Travelers can actively engage in these educational experiences, which is quite impactful.

           Responsible Travel Practices:

Adopting responsible travel practices minimizes the ecological footprint of tourism activities. Travelers can choose eco-friendly accommodations, reduce plastic waste, conserve water and energy, and respect wildlife and cultural sensitivities during their safari experience.

By participating in these activities and supporting responsible tourism practices, travelers can actively contribute to conservation efforts while enjoying the unparalleled beauty of Africa's natural landscapes and wildlife.

Wildlife Conservation Efforts: What It Takes.

Wildlife conservation efforts in Africa play a crucial role in saving wildlife populations and protecting biodiversity.

As many people know, Africa is home to a vast array of iconic and endangered species, including elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, and many others. These species face many threats, including habitat loss, poaching, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict.

Strong conservation initiatives are needed to address these threats and ensure the long-term survival of wildlife populations. Some key strategies and approaches include:

            Protected Areas:

Establishing and managing protected areas, such as national parks, wildlife reserves, and community conservancies, to provide safe habitats for wildlife and conserve ecosystems. This is ongoing.

            Anti-Poaching Efforts:

Implementing anti-poaching patrols, employing ranger teams, and deploying advanced technology, such as drones and GPS tracking devices, to combat poaching of endangered species, such as elephants and rhinos, for their ivory and horn. More boots on the ground are needed in many reserves.

            Community Engagement:

Involving local communities in conservation efforts by providing alternative livelihoods, supporting sustainable development projects, and empowering communities to manage natural resources sustainably. Giving people value and dignity in their livelihoods, ideally with choices.

            Conservation Research and Monitoring:

Conducting scientific research, monitoring wildlife populations, and gathering data on species abundance, distribution, behavior, and health to inform conservation strategies and management decisions.

            Translocation and Reintroduction:

Translocating threatened species to safer habitats, reintroducing species to former ranges where they have been extirpated, and establishing breeding programs to boost populations of endangered species. This is happening in many countries in Africa, such as Mozambique, Uganda, South Africa, and others.

            Public Awareness and Education:

Raising awareness among policymakers, stakeholders, and the public about the importance of wildlife conservation, the value of biodiversity, and the need for sustainable practices. Without education and awareness, the problems will continue.

Public figures, including celebrities, politicians, athletes, and influencers, play a crucial role in conservation efforts due to their ability to reach and influence large audiences. Here are some ways in which public figures can contribute to conservation:

            Promoting Eco-Tourism and Responsible Travel:

Public figures who travel frequently can promote eco-tourism and responsible travel practices. They can highlight destinations that prioritize conservation, promote wildlife conservation projects, and encourage their followers to minimize their impact on the environment when traveling.

            Using social media for good:

Public figures can harness the power of social media to amplify conservation messages and mobilize their followers to act. By sharing compelling content, engaging with their audience, and participating in online campaigns, they can reach millions of people and inspire positive change.

While wildlife conservation efforts in Africa face many challenges, including limited funding, political instability, and conflicts with human development, they have made significant strides in protecting and restoring wildlife populations. However, ongoing commitment, collaboration, and innovation are essential to ensuring the continued success of conservation efforts and the preservation of Africa's rich biodiversity for future generations. The youth are the future ambassadors of this incredible continent.

           Africa. Good Safari Options.

What is the best type of safari?

It varies! I like mixing a variety of lodge-option styles in each safari for a more diverse experience. I specifically choose lodges that practice sustainability. For example, a mobile tented safari is a great option, with the camps ranging from basic camping facilities to fully serviced mobile camps. On the other hand, tented lodges are more permanent and usually have flooring or are raised on stilts. The walls in tented lodges are still canvas – but this is where you will find the plushier luxury experience.

Here are the several types of safaris:

Mobile Guided Safari. A mobile safari is the overland transfer in a 4×4 vehicle between destinations.

Camping Safari. The camping safaris are generally always mobile safaris.

            Self-Drive Safari. A self-drive safari is a self-guided adventure safari.

Fly-In Safaris. You fly into the lodge, you fly out from the lodge.

Some of the Best Safari Destinations in Africa:

            Serengeti, Tanzania.

            Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

            South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

            Masai Mara Reserve, Kenya.

            Kruger National Park, South Africa.

            Botswana’s Chobe National Park

            Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

Kruger National Park or the Serengeti?

Personally, I love the wide-open savanna grasslands or open terrain of the Serengeti, which I find is best for wildlife viewing of lions, while Kruger National Park South Africa is denser and might be better for elephant viewing.

           The Serengeti

has a very interesting ecosystem and is by and large one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. I hear its weather patterns, fauna and flora have not changed too much for as long as a million years or more, giving the area a prehistoric presence! But I wonder how much climate change is affecting this, or not? The Serengeti also has fewer trees because elephants have knocked them down centuries ago. This makes game viewing a lot easier especially during dry season.

           Kenya

is one of Africa’s best safari destinations and is known as the place where the concept of a wildlife safari was born. It has such an abundance of wildlife, incredible landscapes, and deep-rooted cultures. Regions such as the Masai Mara are quite hilly.

           South Africa

has a lot of undisturbed natural beauty spots and varied wildlife.

Personally, I prefer the rustic, less commercialized vibe of Kenya. You’ll likely be able to spot the Big 5 on day 1 or 2.

           For first-time safari goers,

I would go to Northern Circuit, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, or the Masai Mara.

The best time to go on safari is between June and October, during the dry season. This is a cooler time of the year, and you’re more likely to see animals, who are searching for water sources.

Don’t Run. Ever. Just don’t. It’s the trickiest point to implement but when out in the wilds of Africa you must never, ever run.

Look at the animal’s tail. When a lion is angry or feeling threatened it will sweep its tail from side to side. If it’s hunting, it will keep its tail stiff and twitch it from time to time. If the lion is actively hunting you, you will see stalking indications, the lowering of the head. Stand still, even if the lion charges you do not run. This can be extremely intimidating. They charge at 80 km per hour and the roaring is deafening. If you have frozen and then lion is not approaching, but not leaving either, then start to back slowly away. If it starts to move, then freeze immediately. If you have frozen and the lion is not approaching, but not leaving either, then start to slowly back away. If it starts to move, then freeze immediately. Don’t crouch down, you want to You want to show that you are not food , and, not a threat.

Predators don’t see humans as food. Often, they will want to get away from us as quick as possible. We are odd to them! But all predators have a ‘switch’ in their brains. If they see an animal running, it will suddenly become prey. If they see a person running, we will be on their menu. It’s just the primal instinct to chase after prey.

Slowly – very, very slowly – back away from the animal making noise and ensuring you are looking bigger than the animal (don’t crouch down).

it’s very unlikely that animals will pose a threat to you whilst out and about in Africa as animals are shy and tend to keep themselves to themselves. Humans are not on the menu we are not normal prey to them.

So, you must be smart as they are not harmless and there have been some unfortunate events where there has been conflict between animals and humans.

IMPORTANT: OBVIOUSLY never get too close to any animal. They are wild and should be treated with respect.

           I’ve seen leopards

with a heavy presence in African countries such as Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania.

However, it is not easy to spot leopards because they’re very shy animals and usually keep to themselves. Also, they spend most of their time sleeping during the day and are active at night when hunting prey.

South Luangwa National Park in Zambia has one of the highest populations of leopards in Africa. The woodlands and river plains of this beautiful wildlife sanctuary are the best places to spot these elegant creatures, as well as other wildlife including lions, wildebeest, giraffes, crocodiles, and hippos. I love seeing them all!

Other great places to see leopards would be in Masai Mara National Park in Kenya. Here, leopards are seen almost every day on game drives, very close up. The vehicles are in radio contact to call in sightings, and they are allowed to drive off road to track the animals and follow them into the bush. (There’s good and bad to that scenario; good; yes, you get a closer view of wildlife, bad in the interim; flora and fauna can accidentally be destroyed due to the vehicles driving in the bush and the need to sometimes chop branches out of the way to closer etc.

However, it must be said that there are rules and regulations that guides are strictly enforced to follow such as adhering wildlife from a respectful distance without infringes upon the animal’s well-being and allowing for as little interference/disturbance as possible.

Did you know? Wild populations of African leopards are declining? Leopards are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, human persecution, illegal wildlife trade, ceremonial use of skins, prey base declines and poorly managed trophy hunting. Leopard populations in Asia and northern Africa are listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act…AND….The United States is the world's biggest importer of African leopard hunting trophies!

Connect with wildlife organizations that are working with communities to institute preventative measures to protect livestock from predation. In Tanzania, AWF builds bomas for communities living near carnivores. These are predator-proof enclosures keep livestock safe from carnivores. By taking proactive steps we can prevent both livestock and carnivore deaths.

           1. Support Predator-Proof Enclosures: You can donate to or volunteer with organizations that build predator-proof enclosures. These enclosures are crucial in protecting livestock from carnivores and, in turn, preventing retaliatory killings of these animals. You can find organizations that work on such projects and contribute your time or resources to their efforts.

           2. Educate Local Farmers: Get involved in educational programs aimed at teaching local farmers about the importance of coexisting with wildlife and implementing measures to protect their livestock. This could involve volunteering with or supporting organizations that provide such training to farmers.

           3. Support Initiatives like Furs for Life: Furs for Life is an organization working to reduce the demand for animal pelts from African religious groups. You can support their initiatives by donating to their cause, spreading awareness about their work, and even participating in their campaigns to reduce the market for these products.

           4. Connect with Wildlife Organizations: Look for wildlife organizations that are actively working with local communities to implement preventative measures. In the case of Tanzania, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) builds bomas, which are predator-proof enclosures. You can connect with AWF or similar organizations in your region and consider donating, volunteering your time, or participating in their projects.

           5. Promote Responsible Consumer Choices: You can also help by raising awareness among your friends and family about the impact of consumer choices on wildlife conservation. Encourage them to support sustainable and ethical products, and discourage the use of wildlife products, such as fur, that contribute to the demand for animal parts.

           6. Advocate for Policy Change: Get involved in advocating for wildlife protection and conservation policies in your area. This could involve contacting your local representatives, participating in conservation campaigns, or supporting organizations that lobby for effective wildlife protection laws.

           7. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on wildlife conservation issues and best practices. Being informed will allow you to make more effective choices in your personal life and when supporting conservation organizations.

Remember, even small contributions and efforts can collectively make a significant impact in conservation.

Every penny counts and by taking these steps, you can help protect wildlife and their habitats.

I’m excited about the year ahead and the trips that I’m planning in Africa. I love going where the animals are abundant and there’s fewer crowds. An off-season safari in East Africa offers lots of perks. Some of the greatest experiences I’ve had has been in Kenya and Tanzania during the rainy season. Actually, I’m not put off by the rains, I love the moody sky and high grasses and there’s still lots of animals around and the usual steadfast-conservation work going on that we get to be a part of.

Rains are generally short with an intense downpour, then the sun pops back out. I find it doesn’t impact safari tours and actually enhances the experience with all the lush landscapes and more wildlife. Plus, it’s a great option for budget-conscious travelers that prefer a more authentic experience. And many animals give birth during East Africa’s two off-peak seasons. It’s a great time to see animals with their young, from cubs and pups to fawns, foals and calves.

Traveling during off-peak periods could be the perfect way to balance weather and temperature with cost and wildlife viewing potential. It’s ideal to watch the baby animals and birds, escape the crowds, save money, watch the sunrises and sunsets which are even more saturated and vibrant, and is much more very private.

Having the opportunity of being in the African bush with a wildlife vet team as they darted a rhino, I observed the collaborative hands-on conservation work involved which was truly an amazing and humbling experience. From darting the rhino, to taking blood and DNA samples, to notching the ear for identification purposes, and microchipping the horn, I can say it was an opportunity I will never forget, and one that I hope to have again!

Being this close to a 2,500 lb. Black Rhino was truly breathtaking, in fact, it’s so special, almost spiritual. We see their great power and strength, yet the rhino remains fragile and vulnerable. Black rhinos are still considered critically endangered with between

Poaching and black-market trafficking of rhino horn continue to plague the species and threaten its recovery. Being in the African bush, you see just how much it takes for the anti-poaching units, vet teams, and NGOs to protect these beautiful animals. So much work is needed to bring the numbers up to even a fraction of what it once was and to ensure that it stays there.

It was a brisk summer morning and still dark outside when we hopped into the vehicle for a game drive at 4:45 am sharp and began driving on our mission to track lions.

40 or so minutes later we came across some faint lion tracks, figured out which direction they might be, and headed that way. Shortly after that, we hear the deep-vibrational sound of a lion calling out for his pride. We then spot this very large handsome male lion drenched in the morning sunrise, what a sight to see!

After an hour of following this magnificent beast, we reached the pride, and the greeting was classic.

From the female’s greeting, it seemed like the male lion had been away from the pride a few too many nights perhaps leaving them more exposed. There is always more power in numbers. You’ll see how the females sniff him up and chase him away for a bit. Maybe don’t stay out that long next time?

Capturing this wonderful family greeting was very special. The male lion comes back to the pride after several days, the females greet him with a question; where have you been?

The current reality of what’s going on with lions is shocking. The lion population has rapidly declined by 43% percent! Reports say there are less than 20,000 wild lions remaining.

Major threats to lions include poaching, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, canned/captive lion hunting, and the lion bone trade.

Lions continue to be pushed out of their home range and overtaken by communal land. Could it be possible that if all protected areas within the existing lion landscapes were correctly managed for lions, numbers could be more than triple than we have today?

The vital importance to support these core areas and communal lands around them is very clear. Lion loss could be reversed and their populations – and that of many other critically endangered species – could have the chance to recover.

It goes back to supporting the entire ecosystem at work. Animal conservation. Land conservation. Community support, growth, and education.

When in the African bush, for me, the challenge and excitement of tracking lions is certainly one of my favorite things to do, and there’s no better sight than coming across lions.

Lions are symbols of courage and power, majesty, strength, justice, and the military. Their sheer presence when encountering them in the bushveld is quite remarkable. However, most often than not, lion sightings consist of stumbling upon a sleeping pride. Especially in the heat of the day. If you are wanting to focus on seeing lions while on safari, it is recommended to start early in the morning or late afternoon as it is cooler and they are most active.

Lions have no natural predators and therefore are top of the food chain in their ecosystem. They are important for regulating populations of herbivores in their habitats, which helps maintain the grasslands and forests where these animals reside. Lionesses are the hunters of the pride and even though they are physically smaller than male lions, they make up for it in speed. They are in fact up to 30% faster than male lions, reaching speeds of up to 50mph! the females hunt together in packs, effectively increasing their chances of capturing their prey.
