Africa. Good Safari Options.

What is the best type of safari? It varies! I like mixing a variety of lodge-option styles in each safari for a more diverse experience. I specifically choose lodges that practice sustainability. For example, a mobile tented safari is a great option, with the camps ranging from basic camping facilities to fully serviced mobile camps. On the other hand, tented lodges are more permanent and usually have flooring or are raised on stilts. The walls in tented lodges are still canvas – but this is where you will find the plushier luxury experience.

Here are the several types of safaris:

  • Mobile Guided Safari. A mobile safari is the overland transfer in a 4×4 vehicle between destinations.
  • Camping Safari. The camping safaris are generally always mobile safaris.
  • Self-Drive Safari. A self-drive safari is a self-guided adventure safari.
  • Fly-In Safaris. You fly into the lodge, you fly out from the lodge.

Some of the Best Safari Destinations in Africa:

  • Serengeti, Tanzania.
  • Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.
  • South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
  • Masai Mara Reserve, Kenya.
  • Kruger National Park, South Africa.
  • Botswana’s Chobe National Park
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

Kruger National Park or the Serengeti? Personally, I love the wide-open savanna grasslands or open terrain of the Serengeti, which I find is best for wildlife viewing of lions, while Kruger National Park South Africa is denser and might be better for elephant viewing.

The Serengeti has a very interesting ecosystem and is by and large one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. I hear its weather patterns, fauna and flora have not changed too much for as long as a million years or more, giving the area a prehistoric presence! But I wonder how much climate change is affecting this, or not? The Serengeti also has fewer trees because elephants have knocked them down centuries ago. This makes game viewing a lot easier especially during dry season.

Kenya is one of Africa’s best safari destinations and is known as the place where the concept of a wildlife safari was born. It has such an abundance of wildlife, incredible landscapes, and deep-rooted cultures. Regions such as the Masai Mara are quite hilly.

South Africa has a lot of undisturbed natural beauty spots and varied wildlife.

Personally, I prefer the rustic, less commercialized vibe of Kenya. You’ll likely be able to spot the Big 5 on day 1 or 2.

For first-time safari goers, I would go to Northern Circuit, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro, or the Masai Mara.

The best time to go on safari is between June and October, during the dry season. This is a cooler time of the year, and you’re more likely to see animals, who are searching for water sources.

Enjoy your safari!
